OVERVIEW

About UHN Foundation:

University Health Network Foundation is a two-star charity. It has below average disclosure with a C- results reporting grade. For every dollar donated to the charity, 85 cents are available to go to the cause, which is within Ci's reasonable range. It has funding reserves that can cover over four years of its annual grants.

Founded in 1977, the University Health Network Foundation (UHNF) raises funds for research, building projects, patient care, and education at Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Toronto Rehab, and the Michener Institute of Education at University Health Network (UHN). UHNF was created in 2021 after the amalgamation of Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation and Toronto Rehab Foundation.

Toronto General Hospital was the highest-ranked Canadian hospital in Newsweek's World's Best Hospitals 2026, coming 2nd in the world.

In F2025, UHNF granted $220.2m in total–$218.3m to UHN and $1.8m to other donees–up 64% from $134.1m in F2024.

Research represented 41% of grants in F2025 ($90.3m). UHNF funds research on treatments and cures for various neurological and cardiovascular disorders. The charity states that its research program has completed more than 60 clinical trials and has over 30 clinical trials still in progress.

Building projects represented 36% of grants in F2025 ($79.3m). The charity states that the rapid population growth of the city of Toronto demands increased hospital capacity. It currently has two building projects underway: a new tower being built for surgical care at Toronto Western, which will increase operating room capacity by 20% and is expected to be completed in 2028, and an expansion of the Emergency department at Toronto General Hospital, which will increase capacity by 9,000 square feet.

Patient care represented 18% of grants in F2025 ($39.6m). UHNF raises funds to buy new equipment and improve patient services across UHN hospitals. The charity states the Schroeder Arthritis Institute performs more than 1,200 joint replacement surgeries each year. It adds that the department of surgery performs more than 35,000 surgeries each year, including over 375 robotic procedures. UHNF states that the Toronto Centre for Liver Disease at UHN cares for more than 25,000 patients annually.

Education represented the remaining 5% of grants in F2024 ($11.0m). This program supports teaching and learning at UHN for medical students and professionals.

Results and Impact

UHN has achieved several world and Canada-first medical breakthroughs. It performed the first successful single and double lung transplants, developed and first used the Ex Vivo Organ Perfusion System to repair donor organs and expand the pool of transplantable organs, and completed Canada’s first living-donor transplant to treat metastatic liver cancer. UHN’s liver program was the first to identify genes linked to autoimmune liver disease, develop the first curative therapy for hepatitis C effective against all strains, and demonstrate how nanoparticles interact with the liver to open new treatment possibilities. In 2018, UHN scientists also created the first cellular map of the human liver, revealing how differences between individual cells influence their behaviour in tissue, tumours, and disease.

While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of University Health Network Foundation’s results and impact.

This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r). This does not affect its star rating.

Finances

UHNF is a Major 100 charity, one of Canada’s largest charities in terms of donations. It received $183.2m in donations and special events revenue in F2025. The charity reports administrative and fundraising costs combined. Administrative and fundraising costs are 15% of revenue (excluding investment income and net lotteries). This results in total overhead spending of 15%. For every dollar donated to the charity, 85 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

UHNF has $1,218.8m in reserve funds, of which $370.5m are donor endowed. Excluding donor-endowed funds, its reserve funds can cover 421%, or four years and two months of its annual grant costs.

The charity’s funding reserves contributed $81.9m in investment gains in F2025, at an estimated rate of return of 7%. Over the last 5 years, Ci estimates that UHNF’s investment returns have averaged 6%.

UHNF’s financial statements note related party transactions with UHN and American Friends of UHN. In F2025, the Foundation received $62.1m in funding from UHN, even as it provided $218.3m in grants and $20.8m in overhead reimbursements back to UHN. The resulting net transfer from UHNF to UHN totaled $135.4m , accounting for 55% of UHNF’s total revenue (excluding investment income from UHN). The remaining $1.8m in grants went to other unrelated parties (less than 1% of revenue excluding investment income from UHN). Total grants represent 85% of spending in F2025.

Note: 1. Lotteries: According to its financial notes, the charity included net lottery revenues within donations. Ci removed these amounts from donations to report them as lotteries. 2. Grant from related parties: The charity receives grants from two related parties, which it includes within donations. Ci reclassified grants from UHN as other income. It also receives grants from American Friends of UHN, reported in USD. Ci converted the amounts to CAD using the average annual exchange rate ($1.40 in F2025, $1.37 in F2024 and $1.35 in F2023) and reclassified them as other income ($1.4m in F2025, $214k in F2024, $693k in F2023). 3. To report on a cash basis, Ci adjusted grants by changes in amounts due to UHN. This affected expenses by ($826k) in F2025, $12.6m in F2024, and ($851k) in F2023. 4. Ci adjusted for deferred revenue and included it in other revenue as the charity did not disclose the source of the revenue. This impacted revenue in the amount of $532k in F2025, ($231k) in F2024, and ($993k) in F2023. 5. Ci removed amortization from combined overhead costs.
