OVERVIEW

About The Land Conservancy of BC:

The Land Conservancy of British Columbia is a 2-star charity. It has a C- Results Reporting grade, which is below average. Its overhead spending is within Ci’s reasonable range. The charity’s reserves can cover program costs for one year and ten months, which is within Ci’s reasonable range.

Founded in 1997, The Land Conservancy of British Columbia (TLC) protects and restores BC’s land, water, and wildlife. The charity runs two programs: nature conservation and education. It spent $944k on its programs and granted $810k in the fiscal year ending in April (F2024). It did not break down spending by program.

TLC stewards land for nature conservation to protect the wilderness and biodiversity. The charity holds title on 1,130 hectares of land and protects another 5,208 hectares through registered conservation covenants. A conservation covenant is a legal agreement between a land owner and the charity through which the landowner agrees to protect the land in specific ways.

The Education program includes the Deertrails Naturalist Program and Passport to Nature. The Deertrails Naturalist Program is a four-day retreat on the charity’s conserved lands. There is over 30 hours of instruction time during the retreat on topics such as botany, forest ecology, geology, and astronomy. The program is not running in F2025. Passport to Nature allows people to explore TLC protected areas, which are usually closed to the public, on certain dates.

Finances

TLC’s audited financial statements follow line-item costing, which is not a best practice. Given this, Ci referred to its T3010 filings with the CRA to report program, fundraising, and administrative costs.

TLC received $2.4m in donations in F2024, which is 76% of revenue. It received $133k in government funding and $248k in fees for service.

TLC spent $944k on its programs and granted $810k. The total of $1.8m is 55% of revenue. The charity ran a surplus of $1.2m, which is 36% of revenue. It spent $13k on fundraising (1% of donations), and spent $275k on administration, which is 9% of revenue. For every dollar donated to the charity, 91 cents are available to go to the cause. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.

TLC has $2.9m in its reserves (cash and investments). The charity’s reserves can cover program costs for one year and ten months. This is within Ci’s reasonable range.
