Results and Impact
In 2020, the discovery of ketamine’s antidepressant effects has been “one of the biggest breakthroughs in the field of depression in the past half-century.” Esketamine -- a more specific, non-invasive and easier-to-administer form of ketamine -- has recently received Health Canada approval in the form of a nasal spray and is used together with an oral medication for patients with treatment-resistant depression.
In 2022, Dr. Phillip’s research showed that white matter tracts in the brain involved in regulating emotions and making decisions differ in patients with depression who have had a previous suicide attempt compared to those who have had suicidal thoughts yet have not acted on them.
A team from the Royal is currently exploring a procedure called Stellate Ganglion Block (SGB) to treat symptoms of PTSD. The procedure has already been shown to relieve some symptoms of PTSD in minutes by decreasing the release of stress hormones like norepinephrine or adrenaline.
While Ci highlights these key results, they may not be a complete representation of Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health’s results and impact. This charity is not yet rated on impact (n/r).
